Cuba’s “Black Spring” commemorated in Camagüey and Villa Clara
By Roger Rubio and Alaín Ramón Gómez Ramos

Camagüey

The Ladies in White from Camagüey province marched along General Gómez Street on their way to the Church of Santa Ana to attend mass at 8:30 am. In commemoration of the fourth anniversary of the repressive crackdown and the imprisonment of their husbands and family members, the Ladies in White were supported by over 70 activists who attended the mass alongside them.

Strong police vigilance accompanied their non-violent march to the church, yet many people approached the ladies as they walked by, asking about their husbands and showing their admiration. These people also pointed out police officers dressed in civilian clothing that were following them.

These wives, mothers, and family members are committed to marching as the Ladies in White until the last Cuban political prisoner is freed.

Villa Clara

On Saturday, March 17th, over a dozen peaceful activists from the city of Santa Clara came together to pray for freedom for political prisoners and to remember the Black Spring of 2003. The activists met at the home of Guillermo del Sol Pérez, a human rights activist, as all stood in a circle to pray for all political prisoners. After the vigil, the activists had a debate about the March 2003 arrests. Among the organizations present at the event were the Cuban Nationalist Civic Movement, the Cuban Liberal Party, The Cuban Christian Democratic Movement, and the Marti Youth Coalition.
