Neighbors defend activist
By Oscar Sánchez Madán

MATANZAS, Cuba - November 11, 2006 - Alberto Sigler Estrada, an activist from the Independent Movement for an Alternative Option, received support from neighbors who intervened as he was attacked on November 2nd.

The human rights activist was walking through a street in the town of Socorro, when he was surprised by Terencio Camejo, alias Tero, a known collaborator of the political police, who hit Sigler multiple times on his face and abdomen, and attempted to steal a short wave radio that Sigler was carrying.

Dozens of neighbors who witnessed the attack stood up in defense of the activist impeding the attack, and declaring indignantly: “This is an abuse!”

The chief of the local police arrived at the scene after the reaction of the neighbors, and he promised he would prevent similar incidents from reoccurring in the future.
