Havana, 9 August 2007. For five days, several former political prisoners and human rights activists have fasted to mark the Day of Support for Noncooperation with the Dictatorship in Cuba. The fast also commemorates the “maleconazo,” a popular uprising on the streets of Havana on August 5, 1994 and the first anniversary of the passing of well known opposition activist Gustavo Arcos Bergnes.

Activists from several opposition organizations met at 655 Oquendo Street, between Estrella and Carlos III in Centro Habana to launch the fast on Saturday, August 4, according to a report by Carlos Serpa Maceeira, a Sindical Press Agency journalist and Island correspondent for Misceláneas de Cuba.

The activists are continuing their fast at the home of human rights activist Julio Beltrán at the intersection of Calle Soledad and Jesús Pelegrino, where they will remain until August 10. According to former political prisoner Lázaro Joaquín Alonzo Román, the fasters will rotate through different Havana municipalities as they carry out this initiative.

“The political prisoners held at Combinado de la Construcción Augusto César Sandino prison in Pinar  del Río have also joined the fast,” said faster Ángel Enrique Fernández Rivero.

Former political prisoners Ángel Enrique Fernández Rivero, Manuel Pérez Soria, Julio César López Rodríguez and Miguel López Santos are some of the activists fasting. They have received solidarity from several internal opposition groups, including Anti-Castro Youth, Plantados Until Freedom and Democracy in Cuba, the Frank País November 30th Movement and the Andrei Sakharov foundation.

“We wish to inform the exile community and the world that brothers of ours are currently fasting for the freedom of all political prisoners and supporting the noncooperation campaign,” stated activist Alonzo Román from Havana.
