Peruvian youth hold demonstration outside Cuban embassy

Peruvian youth demonstrate before the Cuban embassy in Lima

LIMA, December 18, 2006 – Over one hundred young Peruvians and youth from other Latin-American countries demonstrated their support for human rights in Cuba in front of the Cuban embassy in Lima, Peru on December 16th. The young adults chanted: “Free Cuba; Youth Awaken!” and “Human Rights for Cubans” in front of the embassy in an act of solidarity with Cuban youth on the island.

The demonstration took place spontaneously as a result of a Youth Conference of the Popular Christian Party (PCP), led by former presidential candidate, Dr. Lourdes Flores.

“This demonstrates the feeling of young Peruvians who are in solidarity with their Cuban counterparts who live the same repression that we suffered when there was strong terrorism in our country, a period in which we knew what it was like to live without liberty,” said María Eugenia Muñoz, one of the main leaders of the Youth wing of the PCP.

Youth leaders from other countries from the International Youth Committee for Democracy in Cuba also participated in the Conference. They called on all the young Peruvians to join the international solidarity movement that supports democratic change in Cuba.

“The fact is that more and more young people outside of Cuba know the truth about what happens inside the island. Their indignation with human rights violations is evident in the acts carried out like the one in Peru. These youths are asking for freedom for political prisoners and democratization…” stated José Luis Garza, from Mexico and one of the founders of the International Youth Committee for Democracy in Cuba.

The demonstration in Lima is part of a campaign called, “Youth Awaken,” which seeks to raise awareness about the Cuban reality among Latin American youth. In the past year, hundreds of young people have participated in similar rallies in countries including Mexico, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay.
