Camagüey Cuba. February 9 - Armando Betancourt Reina, a Cuban independent journalist, was tried on February 8th, at the Camagüey Municipal Tribunal after having remained imprisoned since May of 2006.

According to various sources from Cuba opposition and the journalist’s family members, the five witnesses brought in to testify against Betancourt did not accuse him of any wrongdoing, causing the judge to suspend the hearing due to “contradictory statements.”

The sources explained that Special Brigade officials and police officers set to testify at the trial offered no testimonies that would serve the prosecution in their accusation of public disorder. Their statements at the trial were different than their statements given to Eduardo, a well-known State Security agent. The trial was suspended, and although Betancourt remains in legal limbo, his family members are optimistic.
