Geneva, June 12, 2007 - During the afternoon of June 12th, Lizi Chaviano, the daughter of political prisoner and prisoner of conscience Francisco Chaviano González, testified before the United Nations Human Rights Council during an interactive dialogue about the situation of human rights in Cuba.

“Mr. President, as we speak, there are hundreds of Cubans serving unjust imprisonment for their ideas. I ask justice for my father and for a family that has suffered for thinking differently than the official ideology in Cuba. I ask freedom for Cuban political prisoners. I ask for the respect of human rights in Cuba”, stated Lizi Chaviano using the Centrist Democrat International Organization’s right to speak before the Council.

The fifth session of the United Nations Human Rights Council began yesterday in the city of Geneva and will conclude next week. This morning, the Personal Representative of the High Commissioner on Human Rights for Cuba, Christine Chanet, presented her report in which she once again denounced the refusal of Cuban authorities to allow her entry into the country to evaluate the situation in Cuban prisons.

Around noon, the Helsinki International Federation coordinated a parallel forum to discuss the subject of human rights violations in Cuba and Belarus. The forum was attended by numerous United Nations state representatives and accredited press. Speaking on the subject of Cuba were Mr. Christian Lovschall, father of Joachím Lovschall, a Danish youth who was assassinated in Havana on March 29, 1997, Lizi Chaviano, and John Suarez from the Cuban Democratic Directorate.

“This forum served to expose human rights violations in Cuba and as a vehicle for the testimony of two victims of these violations. The forum also addressed how the Cuban regime, a member of the Human Rights Council, has united with other countries that violate human rights to stop Personal Representative Christine Chanet from continuing her term of office, and to politicize the work of human rights specialists and rapporteurs within the Council”, stated John Suarez from Geneva.
