Independent Journalist Armando Betancourt Avoids Additional Sentence
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Camagüey, July 4, 2007.  During a trial held yesterday, the Municipal Court in the city of Camagüey upheld the one year and three month sentence for independent journalist and political prisoner Armando Betancourt Reina. He will be released from prison upon completion of this sentence in less than three months.

Betancourt Reina has been imprisoned since May 23, 2006, under charges of public disorder. He was detained while observing a forced eviction that was taking place at La Guernica, in Camagüey. Since then, he has been unjustly incarcerated at ‘Cerámica Roja’ Prison in Camagüey.

Betancourt Reina was previously tried on February 8, 2007. However, the trial was inconclusive and was suspended.

Julio Romero, member of the Free Expression Solidarity Movement, informed the Cuban Democratic Directorate yesterday:

“Soon we will have our brother among us once again. The news of his release has deeply moved his friends and family. We hope that this brings much joy to all those who have been concerned about him and his family.”
