Directorio presents report on Cuban political prisoners to OAS Inter-American Commission on Human Rights
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Washington, D.C., July 25, 2007. The Cuban Democratic Directorate presented a report summarizing the history of human rights violations and mistreatment in Cuban prisons from 1959 to 2006 at a public audience of the Organization of American States Inter-American Commission on Human Rights on July 20th.

“The importance of this audience before the commission was the opportunity to present this report of over 400 pages documenting the conditions in Cuban prisons,” said John Suárez, of the Cuban Democratic Directorate. “The panel was astounded to realize the lack of access in order to document the situations of political prisoners.”

A video of testimony from former political prisoners and their families recorded in Cuba accompanied the written report during the presentation.

Lizi Chaviano, daughter of political prisoner and prisoner of conscience Francisco Chaviano González, sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, spoke before the commission in Washington, DC: “I ask freedom for Cuban political prisoners. I ask respect for human rights in Cuba,” said Chaviano. “If this commission and the democratic countries that compose it stay true to their commitment to defend human rights, they should not remain silent before this injustice.”
