Montevideo, Uruguay. 7 October 2007. Over 300 young people gathered on Montevideo's popular “Pocitos Beach” amid the sounds of Uruguayan musicians playing Cuban music to call for free elections in Cuba and the release of the island's political prisoners. The youths rejected Cuba's upcoming "electoral farce," to be held on October 28, at the event organized by the Uruguayan Youth Committee for Democracy in Cuba.

"We wish to join our voices to that cry for freedom from the whole Cuban people. I wish to leave a message of solidarity. We have taken up this cause as our own, and we are fighting so that all of Cuba may soon be free, stated Martín Elgue, president of the Uruguayan Youth Committee for Democracy in Cuba.

The event took place on Uruguay's National Day and drew more than 300 people. It was covered live on Radio Martí and Radio República, transmitting messages of solidarity and chants of "Free Cuba; Youth, Awaken!" from the youths and musicians to the Cuban people.
