UPDATED: The “Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial” Begins with Numerous Activities Inside Cuba

The following are the activities carried out during the “Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial” inside Cuba, reported to the Support and Information Center of the “Twelve Days of Solidarity with Cuba” of the Non-Cooperation with the Dictatorship Campaign

 

HAVANA:

 

  • In Havana City, a mass was offered for the soul of Pedro Luis Boitel at the Our Lady of Charity Church. Activists of the “30 of November “Frank País” Political Party attended the mass.

  • From Havana City, the Republic of Cuba Liberal Union issued a statement vía telephone officially supporting  the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial. The Union is committed to carry out peaceful activities and vigils to make known Boitel’s life work.

  • In the Guadalupe Complex in Havana, a group of human rights activists gathered to honor Pedro Luis Boitel, by praying for political prisoners and the human rights situation in Cuba. The meeting took place on 178A Street #37 1907 between 383 and Final, in the Guadalupe Complex.

HAVANA PROVINCE

  • In the municipality of San Antonio de los Baños in Havana, 11 activists of the Nacional Council for Civil Rights and of the Liberal Union of the Republic of Cuba held homage to Pedro Luis Boitel, singing the national anthem and held a discussion on the life of the Cuban martyr.

MATANZAS

  • In the municipality of Perico, in Matanzas, the Pedro Luis Boitel Party for Democracy made an oficial declaration, over the phone, that the organization will take part in the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial. The party promises to hola vigils, fasts, and other political activities and festivities in honor of the Cuban martyr at their main location, located at Infiesta Street #11, between Daniel and Pedro Arieta.

LAS TUNAS

 

  • In the municipality of Manatí, Las Tunas, 13 human rights activists will be holding a fast in the José Martí independent library until May 25th in order to commemorate the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial in Cuba.

HOLGUIN

 

  • Human rights activists from the Western Democratic Alliance have placed a black ribbon on their doors in order to conmemorate the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial in Cuba.

  • In the municipality of Antilla in Holguín, activists of the Western Democratic Alliance launched an activity to conmemorate the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial in Cuba, by gathering 10 activists to wear black jewelry or bracelets. They also met to discuss the life of Pedro Luis Boitel in the independent library Carlos Manuel de Céspedes located on D Street #2 between A and C streets, in the Pueblo Nuevo Complex.

  • In the municipality of Banes, Holguín 11 human rights activists of the Cuban Foundation of Human Rights are holding a fast until May 25th in the Gastón Baquero Independent Library, localated on Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Street, No. 207. The fast is being held in order to commemorate the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial in Cuba.

  • In the municipality of Moa, Holguín 11 activists of the Elena Mederos Foundation and the Nacional Civic Resistance Movement Cívica Pedro Luis Boitel find themselves fasting on Camilo Cienfuegos Street, Moa Centro. In building 30, apartment 21, in Las Coloradas Complex, six activists are fasting in order to commemorate the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial in Cuba.

  • In the municipality of Holguín, 10 activists of the Clarity Movement of Human Rights find themselves fasting in the Felix Varela Independent Library, located in building 9, Alex Urquiola Complex as part of the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial in Cuba.

  • Human rights activists as part of the Western Democratic Alliance participated on May 14th in a fast organized by former political prisoner Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez”, in order to commemorate the birth and death of Pedro Luis Boitel. The fast was held in the independent library Carlos Manuel de Céspedes located on D Street #2 between A and C streets, in the Pueblo Nuevo Complex, Antilla, Holguín. Eight activists, all dressed in black participated in the event.

GUANTANAMO

 

  • From the municipality of Baracoa, in Guantánamo, the Liberation, Reconciliation, and Peace “John Paul II” Movement, made a declaration over the phone officially incorporating themselves to the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial. The movement promises to hold vigils and other activities in honor of the life of Pedro Luis Boitel until May 25, 2008.

  • In the municipality of Baracoa, Guantánamo, around a dozen activists of the Liberation, Reconciliation, and Peace “John Paul II” Movement and the Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy held a meeting in order to discuss the life of Pedro Luis Boitel. Francisco Luis Manzanet Ortiz presented a biography on Boitel during the meeting.

  • In the city of Guantánamo, the Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy (MCJD) reiterated the call for the Pedro Luis Boitel Activism Memorial. Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina, director of the Studies Center of MCJD, confirmed that they will be holding literary gatherings, fases, and interact with the youth in order to conmemorate the life of the student martyr Pedro Luis Boitel.
