Lima, Peru. May 19, 2008. Information and Support Center. More than 1,500 young Peruvians came together in the Pueblo Libre district in Lima, Peru to call for freedom for Cuba’s political prisoners and for free multi-party elections in the island nation.

The Peruvian musical group “Babalu” performed at the well-attended gathering, which featured videos of the Ladies in White, the family members of political prisoners, and about the life of Cuban student martyr Pedro Luis Boitel who died on a hunger strike while a political prisoner under the Castro regime in 1972. The event, titled “The Latin-American Brotherhood Gathering” was organized by the International Youth Committee for Democracy in Cuba as part of “Twelve Days of World Solidarity for Cuba: Toward the Republic” in honor of Pedro Luis Boitel and all Cuban political prisoners.

Former Peruvian presidential candidate Lourdes Flores Nano as well as Peruvian congressman Raúl Castro, president of the Human Rights Commission of the Peruvian Congress, and Dr. Salvador Heresi, mayor of the Municipality of San Miguel in Lima, spoke during the event, which was held on Saturday night, May 17.

The young people chanted "Pueblo Libre por una Cuba Libre," or “Pueblo Libre for a Free Cuba” throughout the evening. "This event was carried out by Peruvians for the Cuban people, and clarified the real situation in Cuba. We want Cuba to be free. We want Cubans to be able to elect their leaders,” stated Maria Gamarra, who helped organize the event.
