Statement from Placetas Hunger Strikers on Recent Raul Castro Regime Announcement
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Placetas. March 4, 2009. Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez”. We the undersigned- Iris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, Diosiris Santana Pérez and Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez”- on hunger strike since February 17th of this year, alert the Cuban people concerning the changes taking place in the circles of the government, which point to a clear militarization and consolidation in the power of leader Raúl Castro and, consequently, the centralization of his repressive apparatus.

The Cuban people should be completely convinced that the changes that are needed are not the replacement of some people with others, but rather a real and profound program of political, economic, and social reforms that will reestablish democracy and a state founded on the rule of law, which have been violated by half a century of totalitarianism.

We who take part in this protest see as equally dangerous the absolute centralization of power within the country and certain measures of flexibility which seek to provide oxygen from abroad to the repressive apparatus that represses our people.

From Placetas, we, Iris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, Diosiris Santana Pérez, and Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez,” sign this statement.
