“WE ALL ARE THE RESISTANCE” Campaign Launches in Cuba and Abroad
By Assembly of the Resistance

Miami. June 22, 2009. Assembly of the Resistance. The Cuban Resistance on the island and in exile announced a new phase in the Noncooperation with the Dictatorship Campaign under the theme “We All Are the Resistance” during a Miami press conference on June 22nd. The conference’s centerpiece was a recorded message sent from Cuba by leading activist and former political prisoner Jorge Luis García Pérez, usually known as Antúnez.

“Even as totalitarianism is committed to dividing us on and off the island, it is time to join our efforts and will for the sake of that common good called freedom,” said Antúnez during a statement that set the tone for the event. In attendance, members of the Assembly of Resistance, a coalition of over 50 pro-democracy organizations that support the Campaign, supported the unity initiatives outlined with frequent and enthusiastic applause.

Antúnez specifically addressed Cubans who live abroad and visit the island, explaining that they are also the Resistance.

“To our compatriots who travel to the island: do not allow [the tyrannical regime] to make you instruments of resignation and accomodation. You can be an important transmitter of the democratic message of the society in which you live. Your duty as a Cuban is to concern yourself with the true situation in which your countrymen live, in deep Cuba- that ordinary Cuban, the queues, the marginal neighborhoods. That is the Cuba from which you saw yourself forced to emigrate. Not the Cuba of hotels and tourism, of restaurants and luxury- areas inaccessible to your own people. Fellow Cuban, if you explain to yours here that by not cooperating with the regime’s institutions and policies and supporting our call we will accelerate change and the reunificiation of the Cuban family, you are also part of the Resistance,” stated Antúnez.

Representing the Assembly’s secretariat, activists Sylvia Iriondo of Mothers and Women against Repression for Cuba, Ángel de Fana of Plantados until Freedom and Democracy in Cuba, and Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat of the Cuban Democratic Directorate presented the new phase of the campaign which seeks to support that the Resistance on the islandhas launched.

“Only the Cuban people themselves are capable of achieving freedom for the Cuban people. The priority of every Cuban must be to support the Resistance. The time has come to spread the word. From this moment on, the front lines of the battle will be in Cuban homes, on the streets where Cubans travel, and in the hearts and minds of Cubans both on and off the island. We All Are the Resistance,” stated Gutiérrez-Boronat.

During the press conference, the following initiatives supporting the “We All Are the Resistance” phase of the campaign were announced.

On Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the intersection of West 49th Street and 16th Avenue, in Hialeah at 10:30 AM, members of the Assembly of the Resistance will hand out information on the campaign to the public.

On Wednesday, August 5, 2009 there will be an international vigil chain in support of the Cuban Resistance. The date commemorates the spontaneous expression of the Cuban people’s resistance against totalitarianism known as the maleconazo which took place in 1994.

The Assembly of the Resistance was founded on March 18, 2009.
