CUBA: Civic Resistance Leader Antúnez in critical condition due to hunger strike in demand of freedom for imprisoned activist

PLACETAS, CUBA, September 13, 2012. Cuban Democratic Directorate. Former Cuban political prisoner Jorge Luís García Pérez Antúnez, leader of the Orlando Zapata Tamayo National Civic Resistance and Civil Disobedience Front (The Front), on hunger strike since September 7, is in critical condition, according to the reports of his wife Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera to the Cuban Democratic Directorate via telephone.

"My name is Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, wife of the former political prisoner Jorge Luís García Pérez Antúnez, I am denouncing the Castroite dictatorship for the damage being done to the strikers who are doing this just for (political prisoner) Jorge Vázquez Chaviano, demanding his freedom. At this moment my husband is in a critical situation. My husband has spent the morning with fever of 39 and a half Celsious (103 degrees Fahrenheit), a lot of pain in the joints, he does not talk, does not open his eyes. I am asking the international public opinion to raise its voice on behalf of those human right activists on hunger strike”. said Pérez Aguilera from Placetas, Cuba.

The Cuban Democratic Directorate demands the immediate release of Jorge Vázquez Chaviano and supports the call by Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera for the international community to lift their voices in protest against what might happen to the strikers.

Jorge Vázquez Chaviano delegate of the Central Opposition Coalition and the Front completed his unjust prison sentence on Sunday, September 9, however the regime of General Raul Castro keeps him in Alambradas de Manacas Prison, beaten and in a punishment cell. Antúnez, who began the strike on Friday September 7, has been supported by 25 other strikers nationwide, among them is renowned economist Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello, who started on Monday, September 10.
