Placetas. February 5, 2014. Cuban Democratic Directorate. At 9:00am this morning, February 5, 2014, combined forces of State Security broke into the home of Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez”, the leader of the National Front for Civic Resistance and Civil Disobedience Orlando Zapata Tamayo (OZT Front), arbitrarily arresting him together with his wife, Yris Pérez Aguilera , and activists Loreto Hernández García y Donaida Pérez Paseiro.
The Cuban Democratic Directorate managed to briefly contact Loreto Hernández who was in a cell, at an unidentified location, who could very briefly report:
"They took him prisoner, but he is not in Placetas. They are already taking the phone, you hear? Down with Fidel!” he said and the line went dead.
Blas Fortún Martínez, member of the OZT Front in Placetas explained that they were arrested this morning and that trucks, police cars and other State Security vehicles surrounded the home. State Security agents along with senior officers of the political police are rifling through the home of Antúnez, which is the national headquarters of the Front. The block is fully taken over by the repressive forces.
"In the morning hours of today I could gaze here at high government officials of the government of Cuba that have reached the home of Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez” and are virtually pillaging his house. They placed Antúnez in a police car along with Donaida and Yris. What I do know is that they are rifling through the house, because they are all in there," explained Fortún Martínez.
In late January 2014, international human rights organizations sent an open letter to Ban Ki -moon, the Secretary General of the UN, where among other subjects questioned the house arrest Antúnez was subjected to prevent him arranging documents to participate in the Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy to be held in late February in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Cuban Democratic Directorate launches an appeal for help to international human rights organizations for the life and physical integrity Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez”, Yris Pérez Aguilera and other activists arrested in Placetas today.
