Support for non-cooperation shown in vigil
By Oscar Sánchez Madán

Matanzas, September 10th, 2006 - Bitácora Cubana – Activists belonging to the Independent Movement for an Alternative Option (IMAO) carried out a vigil on Wednesday, where they called on Castro’s regime to release Cuban political prisoners immediately and unconditionally, and also expressed their support for the non-cooperation campaign launched by political prisoners.

The event began at 8:30pm at the headquarters of the IMAO, located at 22 Street #1910 between 19 and 21. Thirteen participants sang the national anthem, read Biblical psalms, and spoke about the conditions of Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez”, Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta and Félix Navarro Rodríguez, all political prisoners who were recent victims of physical aggressions by prison guards and the political police.

“We will continue to demand their immediate release,” stated Caridad González González, secretary of the feminine front of the IMAO, referring to the imprisoned Cubans.

The participants expressed their support for the “Non-cooperation” campaign, which was initiated by Cuban political prisoners from their cells and has been supported by numerous exile organizations, among them the Cuban Democratic Directorate, Mothers Against Repression, Plantados until Liberty and Democracy in Cuba, and the Cuban Liberty Council. The campaign calls for citizens to not participate in repressive acts and not attend government-sponsored political events.

The vigil concluded at 10:30pm, when activists prayed for prisoners and their families and chanted the organization’s slogan in unison: “God is with us, nothing can stop us.”
