Event commemorates Julio Tang Texier

Nueva Gerona, September 9th, 2006, Buró de Puente Informativo Cuba MiamiDuring a vigil carried out in Nueva Gerona, municipal capital of Isle of Pines, activists observed a moment of silence in memory of Tang Texier, assassinated on September 3rd, 1966 by Army officer Licho Arcia Rojas while Tang was doing forced labor.

 

Upon reading a statement for the occasion, Carlos Serpa Maceira, an independent journalist and Coordinator of the Civic Cultural Project, said, “We guarantee that we will be faithful to the legacy of Cubans who have paid with their lives, prison, and forced exile; Julio Tang Texier your death was not in vain. As Jose Marti said, ‘Death is not lasting when one’s mission in life has been fulfilled.’”

 

During the event, the following organizations were recognized for their support for the Project: Plantados until liberty and democracy, the Cuban Democratic Directorate, and the Committee of Assistance to Dissidence Brigada 2506, as well as the Office of Press and Culture of the U.S. Interest Section in. The Ernest Hemingway Independent Library was also recognized along with the Video Galleries named after Pedro Luis Boitel and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes.

 

Various materials were also available at the event, including the book, “Boitel vive" (Boitel Lives); the República newspaper; Plantados newsletter; Misceláneas de Cuba and Cartas de Cuba magazines, and the screening of the Czech documentary titled, “Cuban Spring”, filmed inside Cuba before and after the repressive wave of 2003 which sent 75 activists and independent journalists to prison.
