By Marylín Díaz Fernández

Las Tunas, January 31, 2007 - Ramón Velásquez Toranzo became another prisoner of conscience on January 26th. The human rights activist was carrying out a pilgrimage along with his wife, Bárbara González and his daughter Rufina, named the March for Dignity, which they commenced on December 10th 2006 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, and aimed to reach Havana. The goal of the pilgrimage was to denounce injustices and human rights violations of the Castro regime.

Toranzo was taken to the Provincial Prison in Las Tunas, known as “El Típico” on January 26 after having been detained at the Third Unit of the National Revolutionary Police since January 24th.

Ramón Velásquez Toranzo is on a hunger strike since he was detained on the 24th, and maintains that he will continue it until freedom or death.
