Havana, June 1.- Human rights activists in Cuba held a peaceful vigil in Havana in solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy who faces a rigged trial at the hands of the Burmese Military Junta.

This action, of a civil nature, took place in the municipality of La Habana Vieja. Taking part in the vigil were Iris Pérez Aguilera of the Rosa Parks Feminist Movement for Civil Rights, Blas Fortún Martínez and Ernesto Arrosarena of the Pedro Luis Boitel Political prisoners, who accompanied fellow activist and Suu Kyi demonstrator Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez” during a 29 day hunger strike followed by an extended fast in Placetas in central Cuba in rebellious protest against the Castro regime.

Also present at the vigil was Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina, president  of the Eastern Democratic Alliance.

“Long Live the Democracy Movement in Burma!” “Down with the Burmese Military Junta” “Freedom for Aung San Suu Kyi!” chanted the Cuban civic activists.

“From here in Cuba, we wish to manifest our solidarity and unconditional backing for Aung San Suu Kyi. In the country of José Martí, we are demanding her unconditional liberation,” stated Jorge Luis García Pérez Antúnez, National Coordinator of the ”Pedro Luis  Boitel“ Political Prisoners.

Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina, from the Cuban Youth for Democracy Movement stated: “The Solidarity Project, which we promote in Cuba, consists of commemorating and demonstrating our solidarity with the victims of the oppressive regimes of the World. On previous occasions, we have demonstrated our solidarity with the students massacred in Tiannanmen Square in China in 1989, and with Ingrid Betancourt while she was kidnapped by the Colombian FARC. Now we are doing it for Aung San Suu Kyi, to whom we convey our solidarity, respect, and admiration, from those of us in Cuba who have raised our voices against the Castro dictatorship.”
