HAVANA, November 26, 2006 – An official inspection revealed that the Cuban workplace is severely affected by “disorder” and “inefficiency.” According to said report, over 55% of production and service entities function at a level of “regular” to “bad”.

The National Office of Workplace Inspection which has carried out three evaluations in the last two years qualified only 904 entities as “good” out of a total of 2,027 entities inspected. The remaining 55.4% of the entities operate with insufficiencies.

The first inspection effected in 2005 revealed that out of 3,507 entities, only 825 (23%) obtained a rank of “good” and 1,958 (56%) merited a ranking of “bad.”

According to Granma, the majority of entities have evident problems,” such as “offices where the [inspectors] found workers sleeping or in animated discussions with coworkers as if they had no duties to fulfill,” and “places where no boss controls the entrance and exit of employees.”

In October, the Minister of Labor announced the enforcement of new rigorous disciplinary measures to take effect in January, seeking to “maintain order,” and non-cooperation of Cuban workers with the dictates of the Communist Party.
