Herrera Acosta on hunger strike blames Fidel Castro
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Camaguey, Kilo 8 Prison- Political prisoner Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta, sentenced to a 20 year prison term in April 2003 for his civic activities, started a hunger strike on June 8th. His urgent testimony reached the Cuban Democratic Directorate via a firsthand telephone conversation facilitated by the independent press agency Youth without Censorship.

“This past June 8th I declared a hunger strike. I do this primarily, in solidarity with my brother in struggle Guillermo Fariñas and due to all the daily tortures, cruel, inhumane and degrading treatments that occur in this prison, blatantly approved, supported and endorsed by this country’s government. Said leadership has implemented these execrable acts giving me an unjust sentence of 20 years in prison for exercising the right to freedom of expression.

“I declare before the world that my state of health is deteriorating at a rapid rate. At this moment I am suffering from a contagious parasitic epidemic as a result of the consumption of non-potable water, arthritis of the spine which causes much dizziness and vomiting and bladder problems which also incite much vomiting. My ailments are well known: Heart problems, kidney troubles, and allergies amongst others.
