Dissident groups demand general amnesty for Political Prisoners
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

June 19, 2006, Martinoticias.com – Cuban dissident groups have demanded that Fidel Castro’s communist regime declare a general amnesty for all political prisoners, as well as suspend the death penalty, taking into account that Cuba is a member of the UN Human Rights Council.

In a statement, the Arco Progresista and the Pro Human Rights Dialogue Coalition also demand an improvement in all aspects of prison conditions.

They urged the government to end the harassment of pro-democracy advocates by government organized mobs, to promote human rights institutionally and to support the internal debate promoted by organizations of the civil society.

The document, signed by dissidents Manuel Cuesta Morúa and Leonardo Calvo, points out that the Cuban government has a weak record in terms of human rights, and is one of the countries in need of most help on the matter.

Arco Progresista and the Pro Human Rights Dialogue Coalition propose that the Cuban regime heed proposals from the international community in order to contribute to the positive evolution of Cuba on the subject of human rights.
