Fariñas continues Hunger Strike
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Santa Clara, Cuba, July 10, 2006 – A note of clarification given to the Cuban Democratic Directorate via telephone from Santa Clara by the independent journalist Niurvys Díaz Remond clarifies that Guillermo Fariñas Hernández continues the hunger strike he began on January 30th. The clarification was necessary due to an erroneous interpretation by various press agencies and international organizations of the medical treatment which Fariñas must undergo every two weeks, called “intravenous nutrition”. Below we cite the correction:

“Guillermo Fariñas Hernández continues his hunger strike contrary to what was published last week by different press agencies. The director of  Cubanacán Press who receives medical treatment through a method referred to as “parenteral nutrition” in order to help the process of scar formation for which he is given vitamins, intralipid, intravenous aminoplasma [amino acid solution] and dextrose solutions in addition to lipofundin, which was removed a few days ago after he presented liquid depositions should conclude this week.

“Fariñas Hernández maintains his position of not ingesting any liquid or food since January 31st until his demands are met and remains in the intensive care unit of the Arnaldo Milián Castro Hospital in Santa Clara.”
