Cuban Democratic Directorate speaks out with regards to the dictatorship's power transfer in Havana

The Cuban Democratic Directorate emits this urgent statement in view of the information presented by the regime in Havana with regards to the health of Fidel Castro and the transfer of power from the dictator to his brother Raul and other members of the dictatorship.

1- We call on our compatriots in exile to remain calm and to not let emotion lead them to commit errors in judgment.

2 - We call on the attention of the international community and all Cubans outside of the Island, that they not lose focus on those who struggle within Cuba for human rights, and democracy; nor from those political prisoners who suffer brutal repression within the prisons. We know that they are the main targets of attacks by the political police.

3 - We affirm our commitment to achieving freedom and the fundamental rights of the Cuban nation, considering that whatever the results of the present events are, there will not be a solution until the Cuban people enjoy a government based on the rule of law.

4 - We will not celebrate victory in this long struggle for liberty until all of the political prisoners are given unconditional freedom, political parties and opposition organizations are legalized, and a clear call to free elections under international supervision is made.

Given by the Cuban Democratic Directorate, on August 1st, 2006.

Lorenzo De Toro, Vice President
