Annan speaks about human rights, Castro’s regime violates them
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

September 20th, 2006, Cuban Democratic Directorate – According to information from the AFP news agency, Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, called for “an end to repression against opposition groups and means of communication,” before the delegates to the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Havana this past weekend.

On the same day in which Annan asked that countries fulfill their “obligation to protect the human rights of each citizen,” Castro’s regime arbitrarily detained Ahmed Rodríguez Albacia, a young independent journalist, as he visited a police station in the municipality of Dragones in Habana Vieja. He was concerned about William Cerero García, an activist detained there. Rodríguez Albacia was forced to remain two days in said location. The detention produced a severe attack of arterial hypertension to the mother of the independent journalist.

Meanwhile, in the municipality of Camajuaní, in Villa Clara province, the family of the imprisoned human rights activist, Librado Linares García, was attacked by a government organized mob that physically and psychologically endangered the wife of the activist, Magali Broche de la Cruz, and their 8-year-old son, César Linares Broche and his two elderly parents. The political police agents were not satisfied with this attack, and also surrounded the home of Marta Linares García, the sister of the political prisoner, and they prevented the carrying out of a spiritual retreat which she was planning to attend.

These are further instances of the innumerable repressive actions carried out by Castro’s regime to impede demonstrations for human rights and freedom for political prisoners during the NAM Conference in Havana.

As this information is being written, the second meeting of the UN’s Human Rights Council is in session, where the participation of NGO’s has been limited to such an extent that the denunciations of human rights violations from oppressed countries will not be heard in that forum.
