Miami, FL, October 4th, 2006, Cuban Democratic Directorate – The U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Carlos Gutierrez, participated in an exclusive interview on a Radio República program hosted by Javier de Cespedes, the Cuban Democratic Directorate’s president, and which was transmitted to the Cuban people on Wednesday, October 4th and will be repeated several times this week.

During the interview, Carlos Gutiérrez was able to respond to the personal attacks made by Cuba’s official press regarding his work in the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba: “The commission’s report clearly states that the only thing we want to do is help the Cuban nation achieve freedom. There are very few countries in the world that remain under communist dictatorship.”

Speaking about the aforementioned report, he emphasized, “We are committed to help the Cuban people, to aid a new transitional government in its path toward a free and representative democracy, distancing itself from the totalitarian communist dictatorship. Our commitment to support a Cuban transitional government includes the following: immediately provide food and water, gas, and medical equipment and to ensure that these provisions are distributed rapidly throughout all of Cuba… and to respect the right of Cubans to feel safe in their homes, in other words, nobody is going to show up and try to take their properties,” he assured.

Regarding the Cuban regime’s attacks alleging that the commission’s report seeks the annexation of Cuba to the U.S., the Secretary of Commerce, who was born in Cuba in 1953, declared that the American government is respectful of the Cuban people’s sovereignty, and that the Cuban people need freedom in order to exercise their sovereignty, which is currently controlled by the dictatorship.

The Secretary of Commerce left Cuba in 1960 and continued his middle school, high school, and college education in Mexico, where he began to work for the multinational company, Kellogg’s. Gutierrez reached the position of CEO at said firm before moving on to head the Department of Commerce.
