January, 16, 2007 - Fransisco Chaviano Gonzalez, a Cuban political prisoner, has made a petition to National State Security to be released based on his worsening health condition, which requires surgical intervention.

In November of 2006, Chaviano was diagnosed with severe heart problems, but was not given treatment at the time, because he required further examination. While trying to obtain further exams in December, he was informed that he had to release the medical team from all responsibility in writing, due to the sensitive nature of his case.

The political prisoner and his wife wrote a letter to National State Security, explaining his grave situation and asking to be released in order to carry out all the necessary exams and procedures. They have not received a response from Cuban authorities, and Chaviano’s health continues to deteriorate while imprisoned.

Fransisco Chaviano Gonzalez is president of the National Council for Civil Rights and was imprisoned in 1994, and has been recognized by Amnesty International as a “prisoner of conscience.”
