Signs in Cuba call for change
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

GUANABACOA, January 29, 2007 – Signs that read “Change” were found throughout the streets of the municipality of Guanabacoa on January 27th. The signs were so numerous that the political officers initiated an operation to seek those in charge of the signs.

According to diverse sources inside Cuba, the authorities began to cite activists of human rights to Unit 14 of the Guanabacoa police. First they cited a few individuals, and Monday they cited more than 15 people. Other human right activist rallied at the doors of the police station to support those that were being interrogated inside.

One of the people being interrogated was human rights activist Antwan Clemente Hernández. They confiscated his identification card, although soon they gave back to him and allowed him to leave. He remained outside of the station waiting for the other activists to be released. The officers instructed him to reenter the station, they confiscated his identification card and up to now his location is not known, therefore they have not reported his status to his relatives, and the officials of this unit simply say that he is being detained.

"This situation has caused a great amount of consternation in the municipality of Guanabacoa", affirmed Marta Beatriz Roque. "The word change is simply a word, but has terrified the government.  The government is in more fear than the opposition.  The government thinks that any thing can ignite the spark that produces a popular outburst."

In recent months, the appearance of anti-government signs have increased throughout the island. The slogans that are written on these posters are: "Down with Fidel", "no more dictatorship" and "We want freedom and justice".
