Mexico City, Mexico, January 31, 2007, Cuban Democratic Directorate – The Christian Democrat Organization of America (ODCA) inaugurated its new headquarters in Mexico this past weekend. The international conference was a success for all freedom loving people, and especially for those who advocate for democracy in Cuba. In addition to representatives from throughout Latin America, the event was attended by foreign diplomats based in Mexico. The exception was the Cuban embassy, whose ambassador was invited but was not allowed to attend by his superiors due to the presence of pro-democratic organizations at the forum.

Manuel Espino, ODCA’s new president stated before the national and international press that they would find ways to facilitate and achieve reconciliation among all Cubans.

“We want as many actors, both on and off the Island, to recognize that the main problem in Cuba is between the dictatorship and the Cuban people, not the United States and Cuba; it is an internal problem of that nation,” said Espino, who is also the president of the National Action Party (PAN), which currently governs Mexico.

The Christian Democrat International representative to the European Union, Antonio López Istúriz, noted that more than 60 political parties in Europe and over 90 parties from the Centrist Democrat International support a transition from dictatorship to democracy in Cuba.

The Cuban Democratic Directorate was represented at the event by its president Javier de Cespedes and Diane Cabrera.
