Spanish press and political leaders speak out against the “Moratinos deal”

Aznar speaks out

As part of a growing tide of discontent with the Zapatero government’s policy towards Cuba, the Spanish newspaper El Pais published an article stating:

“Cuban opposition against Spanish proposal for dialogue regarding human rights. Skepticism and caution of European diplomats, as they wait for Havana’s response.”

According to EFE, the former president of Spain, José María Aznar, stated today at a conference at Georgetown University that the recent visit to Cuba of foreign minister, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, has been a “calamity for dissidents.”

"Cuban dissidents have a justified impression that the Spanish government has abandoned them,” said Aznar. In his opinion, the recent visit of Moratinos to Havana – where he met with the provisional president Raul Castro and other authorities – have also given Cuba dissidents the impression that Spain “does not care about human rights or liberty for Cubans.”

Thus, the former Spanish president gave a clear message of support today to Cuban dissidents and has made a call for all Spanish citizens to follow his example because according to him “they will provide invaluable help toward a democratic future in Cuba.”

"I do not find a reason why we should wish for a free and stable democracy for Spain and not for Cuba,” stated Aznar who insisted on the necessity of supporting dissidents.

It has to be done, he added, “Because they are fundamental, because I know about the dissidents’ problems, and I know of their loneliness and because history demonstrates that without them there cannot be a democratic future in Cuba.”
