“We must fight for the freedom of all Cuban political prisoners”

After having served an unjust sentence of 17 years and 38 days, Cuban political prisoner Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez” was released on April 22nd from El Pre Prison in Santa Clara. In an exclusive telephone statement to the Cuban Democratic Directorate, Antúnez reaffirmed his call for non-cooperation with the dictatorship and his commitment to the struggle for a free Cuba.

“To the Cuban people I reiterate that we must not lose faith, as I said at another moment in my call for non-cooperation. I also reiterate my call for non-cooperation. Cuba will be free,” he said only hours after being released.

“We went to pick him up at the prison around six in the morning and we took him to his mother’s grave, the first place he wanted to go. As we entered the town of Placetas, he got out of the car because he wanted to enter the town on foot, to be able to walk through his town’s streets. The people have been very affectionate and supportive of him,” stated Bertha Antúnez, sister of the ex political prisoner.

According to Antunez’s family and other human rights activists, his release does not in any way constitute an act of good will on the part of the Cuban regime. He was released only after serving every day of an unjust sentence for the supposed crime of publicly expressing his opinions about the situation in Cuba in 1990.

“The road has been difficult, but the airs of liberty are now discernable on the horizon. I am even more committed to this struggle and more committed to the cause for which I was imprisoned. My body, heart and soul will always be at the service of Cuba. No person or thing will make us yield,” stated Antúnez.
