The Union of Cubans in Exile Honors Cuban Democratic Directorate Youth

Miami, July 27, 2007. Before a packed house at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, the Union of Cubans in Exile (UCE) honored the Cuban Democratic Directorate’s (Directorio) work for the cause of Cuba’s freedom. The award was specially dedicated to the young who have demonstrated the love of country they inherited from their parents and their commitment to the cause. Fernando Villa, an UCE leader, opened the ceremony at 8PM with remarks on the merit of Directorio’s work. Clergymen Monsignor Agustín Román and the Reverend Martín Añorga followed with an invocation, thanking God for the struggle waged by those present and praying for Cuba’s speedy liberation. Roberto Piñeiro then offered an overview of UCE’s history. Orlando Gutiérrez, Directorio National Secretary, thanked the many generations of exiles for the legacy of Cuban spirit they had passed on to their descendants and explained the important work carried out by Directorio youth.
Cuban musicians performed an ample variety of Cuban music, including pieces from the classical piano repertoire and trova tradicional to the delight of the audience.
The evening concluded in moving fashion. Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez, a human rights activist and former political prisoner unjustly incarcerated for 17 years who is fully committed to the nonviolent civic struggle for democracy in Cuba expressed his gratitude to the Cuban exile community via recorded message.
