Miami, August 8, 2007. On Saturday, August 4th, over 100 people, including members of 45 Cuban exile organizations -university students, and older generations- gathered at the intersection of 8th Street and 27th Avenue in Southwest Miami at 10 a.m., to recognize  the Day of Support for Non Cooperation with the Dictatorship in Cuba.

“It is impressive how all of the different generations of the Cuban exile community have come together to support those who struggle for democracy in Cuba. As a youth, I feel that it is my responsibility to make my presence known on such a day,” said Alexander Brizuela, student at Florida International University.

However, what was most impressive was the number of people who would congregate, or simply pass by on foot or in their cars, showing interest in the campaign. The activists distributed a total of 7,000 flyers with information- testimonies and photos from Cuba- urging the Cuban people to non-cooperation with the regime, DVDs with video messages from artists such as Willy Chirino, Lissette Álvarez, Marisela Verena, Jon Secada, Carlucho and Donato Poveda who support the campaign, and bumper stickers were all distributed during the activity. Thousands of stickers with key phrases of the campaign were handed out. Thousands have reached Cuba and, as everyone can see in the flyers handed out, they are being placed on doors, walls, and public places throughout the Island.

Active members of the Cuban exile community present at the event included Julio Estorino, radio journalist for Radio Paz and Radio República, Commander Húber Matos, Ramon Saul Sanchez from the Movimiento Democracia, Ángel de Fana from Plantados, Sylvia Iriondo from M.A.R. por Cuba, and Orlando Gutierrez from the Cuban Democratic Directorate, among others.

“The enthusiasm of the participants was ever present and it was quite noticeable the receptiveness of those driving by as the displayed the victory symbols and honked their car horns,” remarked Humberto Bustamante from the Cuban Democratic Directorate.
