Directorio’s National Secretary Challenges “La Mesa Redonda” on Radio República
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Miami, September 12, 2007. On Radio República’s show “Hablando en serio” (Speaking Seriously), which is transmitted to Cuba, Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat, National Secretary of the Cuban Democratic Directorate, spoke about his participation on the televised debate that he had with Leonard Weinglass, defense attorney for the five Cuban spies currently charged with espionage. The debate was transmitted on August 29th to the United States and worldwide via-satellite on CNN’s The Situation Room, hosted by the prestigious reporter Wolf Blitzer.

The program, Speaking Seriously, will air via short-wave radio at the 49th meter bandwidth at 8 p.m. on September 13th. Participants on the show include Gutierréz-Boronat, Julio Estorino, and Hernán Yanes, the last two being respected analysts of Cuban policy, therefore creating an environment of debate on the case of the five Cuban spies from the “Wasp Network”.

The Cuban television program, La Mesa Redonda” (The Round Table), dedicated much of their September 4th episode to the debate aforementioned, excluding only a portion of some of Gutiérrez-Boronat’s last arguments.

“Through these microphones of Radio República, I would like to challenge the directors of La Mesa Redonda to a public debate on this program,” expressed the National Secretary of the Cuban Democratic Directorate. “I am willing to go to Cuba and sit with that panel, before those cameras, and debate openly and live, the reality of Cuba with whomever, and I would go by myself.”

On Speaking Seriously, Janisset Rivero, National Adjunct Secretary of the Cuban Democratic Directorate who later joined the participants, rebutted those comments made by the panel of La Mesa Redonda. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank those individuals who have attacked us, since through those attacks they have in reality recognized us for our work against human rights violations,” mentioned Rivero during the program.

Gutiérrez-Boronat challenged the participants of La Mesa Redonda to speak openly about the real situation of all Cubans on the island: “We are willing to open these Radio República microphones so that they can debate live the reality of Cuba’s state without any censure whatsoever. Let us begin the change now with a truly open debate on La Mesa Redonda and Radio República,” concluded Gutiérrez-Boronat.
