By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Matanzas. University activists from the Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy held a memorial before the tomb of student leader José Antonio Echeverrías tomb in Cárdenas on the 50th anniversary of his death, and 75th anniversary of his birth. Echeverría led the Revolutionary Directorate, a leading force in the struggle for democracy in Cuba in the mid 1950s.

“We triuly passed on his message and his spirit, just as he would have wished,” said Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina, director of the MCJD’s Center for Alternative Studies on Radio Republica.

According to Roberto de Jesús Guerra Perez, a former prisoner of conscience, the youths joined hands and solemnly sang the nacional anthem. Upon its conclusion, they shouted expressions of praise for Echeverria such as: “eternal glory to our country’s martyrs.” Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina, president of the MCJD, gave remarks about the permanence of Jose Antonio Echeverría’s ideas. Among those who attended were Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina, Denia Rodríguez del Toro, Roberto de Jesús Guerra Pérez and Norberto Martí Santos.
