By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Matanzas, Cuba.  January 28, 2008.  Cuban Democratic Directorate.  The morning of January 28, activists of the Alternative Option Independent Movement (MIOA) placed a crown of flowers before the statue of the apostle José Martí, situated in the town square of Pedro Betancourt in Matanzas, for the 155th anniversary of his birthday.

The floral tribute, prepared by the activists of the MIOA, exhibited a sash with the sign:  "To Martí, From the Alternative Option Independent Movement ".  This floral offering was placed in the midst of a military interception of State Security agents.

"The activists took the agents by surprise and due to the seriousness of this action, the agents opted neither to attack nor to hurl insults to the activists […] they did not destroy the flowers, as they have usually done before," expressed the human rights activist Juan Francisco Sigler Amaya, also source of this information.

To commemorate this date, other activities were carried out in the national headquarters of the MIOA, where supporting José Martí thoughts were read and a brief outline of the life and work of this national hero was read.
