Campaign for the Adoption of Cuban Political Prisoners Reaches Sweden
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Stockholm, Sweden. May 6, 2008. Cuban Democratic Directorate. Leading figures of Swedish politics and civil society attended a conference about the current situation of Cuba’s political prisoners and prisoners of conscience featuring Cuban opposition activist Bertha Antúnez Pernet, who is also the sister of activist and former political prisoner Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez.”

Antúnez Pernet, along with John Suárez of the Cuban Democratic Directorate, is touring Europe seeking solidarity for Cuba’s political prisoners. The campaign has taken her to Norway, Italy, Spain, and now Sweden. The conference in Sweden was attended by members of the Swedish Moderate Party, the Jarl Hjalmarson Foundation, and Swedish citizens interested in the subject.

“We feel very optimistic because we have seen the interest in helping us and in sponsoring the prisoners. We have gone to places and been told that we could already count on a certain number of prisoners to be sponsored” said Antúnez Pernet in a statement to Radio República.

The issues of freedom for Cuba and the continuing repression suffered by Cuba’s political prisoners and prisoners of consciente has garnered high levels of interest throughout the various stages of the campaign.

“People have shown their alarm over the circumstances. We have seen it in their expressions as we explained that there has been no change in Cuba, that there has only been a succession from one man to another, and that the regime continues to be the same repressive regime as always,” stated the activist.
