Message from the Cuban Democratic Directorate to the People of Cuba

Brother Cubans, in the name of the Cuban Democratic Directorate, your brothers in the diaspora, we say to you that now more than ever we are praying to Mary, Our Lady of Charity, patroness of Cuba, for the life and future of our beloved people.

We know firsthand the sadness, anguish, and pain overcoming you, and we say to you: you are not alone. We are working with great intensity so that sorely needed international aid may reach you. The only obstacle preventing that aid from reaching you, as it has already reached our Haitian brothers, is Raul Castro’s government which has refused to receive it.

We ask you not to lose faith, and to demand respect for the rights that are properly yours. While the efforts to make sure that international relief will reach you continue, the Cuban government has the responsibility and the obligation to answer to its citizens.

How many resources does the Cuban government use to help other countries? How many doctors, how much medication and infrastructure does the Cuban government dedicate for export to other nations? This is a time of emergency. This is the moment when those substantial resources should return to our country to serve our people.

For nearly 50 years, the Cuban government has demanded that its citizens accept adverse conditions, that they remain silent, that they march in public squares, that they endure and make sacrifices, and that they silently support the revolutionary process. Now the people need those functionaries, who represent the government, to answer to them directly, not evasively. The resources to help a helpless people must be found. Now is the time to demand answers from the government. This is the time to ask for what the Cuban people has earned during years of sacrifices and humiliation.

Brother Cubans, we say to you once again to keep up hope. Our Lady of Charity, with her protective mantle, will save us. She will save Cuba from this terrible disaster. Each Cuban is now a luminous torch that must shine with its own light through the shadows of misfortune. It is time to shine with strength and persistence, with the strength given by reason and love.

Brothers, you are not alone. Now, more than ever, we are one people. Cuba ought to shine, from the depths of the darkness of her pain, with the light of hope.
