Guantánamo. April 30, 2009. Cuban Democratic Directorate. In the afternoon hours of April 29th, Néstor and Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina, brothers and leaders of the resistance movement in Cuba, were arrested in the city of Baracoa, according to their father Ramón Rodríguez Azahares.

“They were at their mother’s house, Mrs. Dinorah Lobaina, which is located in a rural area of Baracoa, when they were arrested. The political police agents carried out searches in both the house where they were arrested and mine, which is located in central Baracoa. The search of my house lasted from six fifteen in the afternoon until nine o’clock at night. This is a violation of our rights, they don’t know what to do anymore to harm us”, stated the activists’ father in a telephone communication from Baracoa.

According to family sources, the activists were transferred to the State Security Operations Headquarters in the city of Guantánamo, and are currently being processed for the supposed crime of “disturbance of the peace”. The official in charge of the case is Lieutenant Odelín, and as of the moment, family members have not been able to see them to get direct information about their situation.

“During the searches of both homes, the political police agents confiscated a laptop computer, a few books, and a radio. We are worried about their case. It has also come to our attention that Keyber Rodriguez Fernández was also arrested and his home was also searched. We don’t know anything about his whereabouts and we are considering him missing at the moment”, affirmed Cristián Toranzo Fundichely from the Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy.

Some resistance organizations have issued statements concerning this arrest, offering their solidarity with the detained activists, amongst them are the Central Opposition Coalition, the Pedro Luis Boitel Political Prisoner Movement, and the Resistance Movemient,

The Cuban Democratic Directorate issues an urgent call to international human rights organizations and the international community so they may also denounce the arbitrary arrests of these activists, which are not isolated events, but rather the continuation of a broad campaign of violence and abuse on behalf of the Castro regime and its’ political police, against human rights defenders in Cuba.
