Cuban Resistance Day- 15th Anniversary of the August 5th, 1994 Maleconazo Freedom Uprising
On August 5, 1994 thousands took to the streets of Havana to demand their freedom. Cubans of all ages, despite the police presence, marched chanting “long live human rights” and calling for an end to the dictatorship through various areas of the Cuban capital adjacent to the sea wall (Malecón). This action was one of the most prominent demonstrations of Cuban resistance to communism. Additionally, friends of the cause of freedom in Cuba will also mark this day in different countries. Vigils which will take place between 8pm to 9pm that day with lighted candles in support of the internal resistance in Cuba and demanding freedom for all Cubans, who want to live in democracy.
