From Cuba: A Call to Action in Solidarity with Political Prisoners

The Cuban Democratic Directorate disseminates this urgent appeal from activists on the island

Placetas, Villa Clara, Cuba. 13 August 2009. The Cuban citizens’ movements: the Pedro Luis Boitel Political Prisoners and the Rosa Parks Feminist Movement for Civil Rights, both participants in the Central Opposition Coalition, in coordination with member organizations of the Eastern Democratic Alliance, call upon all members of the resistance in Cuba, on the Assembly of the Resistance, and on other compatriots, wherever they may be, to join and participate in a campaign of support and solidarity with 10 of our brothers who are in prison enduring the most difficult and refined torture methods, harsh treatment, and flagrant violations of their human rights.

Their names are:

Alfredo Domínguez Batista, José Daniel Ferrer García, Darsi Ferrer Ramírez, Mario Alberto Pérez Aguilera, Ernesto Mederos Arozarena, Juan Luis Rodríguez Desdín, Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta, Librado Linares García, Ariel Sigler Amaya, and Orlando Zapata Tamayo.

For these ten men, unjustly imprisoned for defending and promoting fundamental human rights and for struggling for the establishment of a democratic and just society in a peaceful manner, we demand and to the repression of which they are victims and invite their compatriots to extend a hand of solidarity to them and to their families by carrying out a public citizens’ campaign that will spread in a gradual and systematic way throughout the length and breadth of the country.

Compatriots: by saving the lives and defending the physical integrity and dignity of these worthy Cubans, we include all political prisoners and members of the internal opposition, who are also victims of official repression.

The campaign will commence on August 12^th and will last indefinitely.
