Guantánamo, Cuba. August 31, 2009.

This is former political prisoner Yordis García Fournier, a member of the Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy (Movimiento Cubano de Jóvenes por la Democracia [MCJD]). I was released at 9:00 AM on Monday, August 31st. I was imprisoned on the same day last year, August 31st, 2008, along with Isael Poveda Silva, my brother in the cause, who was charged alongside me and is also an MCJD activist. He is still being held captive at Combinado de Guantánamo prison. I was released amid a highly visible State Security operation directed not only against me, but also against my family, who went to pick me up.

I was officially warned. They issued me a letter containing an official warning, in what they refer to as a “prophylactic” measure, against supposed activities, that I, according to them, will continue to engage in on the streets with my brothers – which is true, of course. I do not intend to stop being who I am. I will always be who I am.

That is the situation. At this time, I am out of prison, but I was not “set free” as they said, because I am not truly free. I told them I will be fully free when Communism and dictatorship no longer exist in this country. They merely allowed me to leave Combinado de Guantánamo prison and go home – no more than that.

Here I am. I feel ready and willing to continue struggling and working to further this noble and just cause, the liberation of the Cuban people from this dictatorship. I will always be willing.

I have a very clear message, not only to the youth of Cuba, but to the whole Cuban people. I want you to be conscious of the unique historical moment in our country. I consider this a good moment to tell the Cuban regime, “Enough. We have been oppressed for 50 years by the Castro brothers and we do not want any more of this succession.”

I think we have to join in the struggle and continue onward. This is a good moment to join in the struggle that we are all waging, a struggle belonging not only to those of us who openly confront the Cuban regime, but rather a struggle for the sake of the good of the whole Cuban people.
