Imprisoned Opposition Activist Hospitalized after Weeks on Hunger Strike
By Cuban Democratic Directorate

Santa Clara. September 28, 2009. Cuban Demcoratic Directorate. Imprisoned Cuban opposition activist Mario Alberto Pérez Aguilera is in very serious health condition according to a report by his sister, Iris Tamara Perez Aguilera.

“I went to where the Unit Chief of the prison was, and he himself informed me that my brother has been in the hospital at Guanajay prison for several days,” stated Iris, who is president of the Rosa Parks Feminist Movement for Civil Rights, to the Cuban Democratic Directorate by telephone.

According to the activist, her brother began his protest demanding respect for his rights on September 5, and had not even taken water since September 19.

“The guard detail had to remove my brother by dragging him out,” due to his weakened state of health, added Iris.

Mario is serving a 10 year sentence at El Pre prison in Villa Clara on a false common charge. He is a member of the Pedro Luis Boitel Political Prisoners.

“I am holding the Cuban government responsable for what may happen,” stated Iris.

Iris and her husband, leading opposition activist Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez,” led a hunger strike earlier this year demanding an end to torture and mistreatment against Mario during which they did not take solid food from February 17 to May 12 of this year.
