Cuban American Elected to International Youth Political Council

Berlin, Germany. December 3, 2009. Cuban Democratic Directorate. A 25 year-old Cuban-American is one of the newest leaders of the International Young Democrat Union (IYDU), a global alliance of youth organizations from 50 countries. Aramis L. Perez was elected to the post of Vice-Chairman of the IYDU Council at the organization’s annual meeting held last weekend in Berlin.

 

“On the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, IYDU has shown how strongly it supports the nonviolent movement for freedom in Cuba. My vice-chairmanship will help connect freedom activists in Cuba with the international community,” stated Perez, Executive Secretary of Young Cubans in Action, an IYDU member organization.

 

Throughout 2010, IYDU will lead an effort to support the freedom movement in Cuba. One of the organization’s goals will be to campaign for the release of Cuba’s over 300 political prisoners, some of whom are in dire health.

 

“I call on the Cuban regime to release all political prisoners without condition, including independent journalist Normando Hernández González, who urgently requires medical attention,” stated Perez.

 

Perez is joined on the Council by young leaders from the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Poland, Jamaica, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Cyprus, and the United States of America.

 

The Council Meeting was hosted by Jünge Union, the youth organization of current German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s governing Christian Democratic Union / Christian Social Union. Chancellor Merkel greeted and addressed the IYDU in person.

 

The Council’s Deputy Chairman is Daniel Walther from Jünge Union, Germany. The Council’s Chairman is Tim Dier, from the Conservative Party, United Kingdom.

 

According to their website, “The Patron of IYDU, former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, described the role of IYDU as being ‘to re-preach, practice and earn anew the freedom that we have and that we wish to extend more widely to the whole world.’ ”
