Washington, DC. May 9, 2011. Assembly of the Cuban Resistance. A mission representing the pro-democracy Cuban Resistance was received by the Ambassadors of Hungary, Estonia, and Lithuania, and additional members of the international diplomatic corps in Washington, DC. The mission's objective is to seek support and recognition for the Orlando Zapata Tamayo National Civic Resistance and Civil Disobedience Front and the Resistance's struggle for freedom in Cuba, as well as to condemn the Communist regime’s murder of a democracy activist this weekend.

The murder of Juan Wilfredo Soto, the ongoing repression, and the beatings of Resistance leaders like former prisoner of conscience Angel Moya Acosta and Sara Martha Fonseca Quevedo demonstrate that the regime is responding with increasingly brutal violence to the Resistance's growing public demonstrations for freedom,” stated Sylvia Iriondo, a member of the Secretariat of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance, and one of the delegates taking part in this mission.

The delegation’s members are Sylvia Iriondo, Dr. Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat, Anolan Ponce, Isela Fiterre, María Eugenia Cosculluela, John Suárez and Calixto Navarro Acosta. The delegation will share information on the struggle for freedom in Cuba and recent instances of repression against Resistance activists with several international missions in Washington, DC, as well as with the offices of members of the US Congress.

The Orlando Zapata Tamayo National Civic Resistance and Civil Disobedience Front is a nationwide coalition of Cuban pro-democracy organizations who engage in open, nonviolent civic resistance to defend the Cuban people's human rights and to fight for a democratic transition and the end of the Communist regime.

The National Civic Resistance Front grew out of regional pro-democracy coalitions including the Pinar del Rio Democratic Alliance, the Central Opposition Coalition, the Camagüey Unity for Human Rights, and the Eastern Democratic Alliance.

The Assembly of the Cuban Resistance is a coalition of more than 50 pro-democracy organizations in Cuba and in exile, which also represents the National Civic Resistance Front abroad.
