CUBAN OPOSITION LEADER JORGE LUÍS GARCÍA PÉREZ “ANTUNEZ” IN HOUSE ARREST

Miami, June 26, 2014. Cuban Democratic Directorate. Jorge Luís García Pérez “Antúnez”, leader of the National Civic Resistance Front has been imposed a precautionary measure of house arrest while he awaits to be tried for the alleged crime of “civic unrest,” according to an official document that was presented to him after his last arbitrary detention on June 15, 2014.

“Right now I am processed with the File # 651 of 2014 of the Criminal Processing and Instruction Unit of Villa Clara. I am being instructed by Joaquín Piedra León. According to the document whose faculties are conferred by Article 27 of the Criminal Procedure Act and the prosecutor who accuses me, or placed this measure is Daylí Carrazana Rodríguez. This is a document duly signed and also stamped” said Antúnez by telephone from Placetas to the Cuban Democratic Directorate.

The opposition leader and his wife, Yris Pérez Aguilera, were detained on June 15, 2014 in the city of Placetas, after realizing a protest seeking medical attention for a sick man who was lying in the middle of a public road without receiving attention from the authorities.

Both had been previously detained on June 11, 2014, after their home was raided in the early hours of the morning, and they were taken to police detention centers where they were severely beaten, tortured, in the case of Antúnez lost consciousness twice product of choke holds, and was assaulted by an unknown man wearing a doctor’s coat within police headquarters, and injected with an unidentified substance on two occasions.

The property of the opposition couple was vandalized by the police, and even the entrance of the home was destroyed, denounced Yris Pérez Aguilera in the video attached to this press release.

"I've always said, will say, hold and maintain that I refuse to abide by any law or regulation that may co-opt the free exercise of my rights as a citizen of my right as a free person. That is why I reserve the right when I deem appropriate and strategic to give an answer to this situation. According to them, I have to ask permission to move from Placetas and to travel to places outside of Placetas; they must be places like hospitals. I know this is nothing but a crude maneuver, primarily for closing me off, to suffocate, to handcuff my movements, to stop the work being done by the Resistance Front at this moment. In this case the program Towards the National Strike, creating commands and Resistance councils and more," affirmed Antúnez.
