Shares panel with Hong Kong Pro Democracy Activists Geneva, February 25, 2015. Cuban Democratic Directorate. Noted human rights defender and resistance leader Juan Francisco Sigler Amaya of the Independent Alternative Option Movement attended the Seventh Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy (http://www.genevasummit.org/). This was the first time that the Cuban activist has traveled outside of Cuba. Juan Francisco spoke on the afternoon of February 24, 2015 on a panel shared with Hong Kong student activists Alex Chow and Lester Shum of the Hong Kong Federation of Students that asked the question “Can Communist Regimes Reform?” Also participating with Juan Francisco on the Cuba portion of the discussion was opposition leader Manuel Cuesta Morua. Sigler Amaya whose family has suffered intense persecution from the Castro regime because of their pro-democracy activities, began his 15-minute presentation by saying that “I’m a farmer, not a lawyer. But I’m here to talk about what’s going on in my country.” He stipulated that: “The Castro tyranny uses technology, investments and credits from abroad to sustain the brutal repressive political apparatus” and added that: “What Cuban communism will not accept is reform. The system is incompatible with the rights, rule of law, freedom, peace and dignity of the individual, those things that a person needs to be able to advance.” The Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy (http://www.genevasummit.org/) hosted by 23 nongovernmental organizations from around the world was founded in 2009. This gathering in 2015 included not only top name dissidents from China, Iran, Russia, North Korea, Turkey, Pakistan, Cuba, Venezuela and Ukraine but also a Nigerian school girl who escaped from Boko Haram, a French journalist held hostage by ISIS for 10 months and two journalists formally of Charlie Hebdo. The Cuban Democratic Directorate is one of the host organizations of the Summit. ###
