Cuban Opposition leaders sign agreement for democratic transition in Cuba during unity symposium in Panama City

Panama City. April 8, 2015. Cuban leaders residing both inside and outside of Cuba signed a joint platform for transition in Cuba consisting of ten points outlined in the Agreement for Democracy in Cuba. Under this theme, a symposium of Cuban opposition unity will be held on Thursday, April 9th beginning at 9am at the Courtyard by Marriott Multiplaza, Via Israel, Multiplaza Pacific Mall in Panama City. This event will be attended by politicians and civic leaders who struggle inside Cuba: Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez”, Juan Carlos González Leiva, Yris Pérez Aguilera, Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina, Leticia Ramos Herrería and Mario Félix Lleonart. As well as Cuban opposition figures in exile such as: Sylvia Iriondo, former congressman Lincoln Díaz-Balart, Rogelio Matos, Félix Rodríguez and Dr. Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat. "This delegation does not recognize the Castro regime as the true representative of the Cuban people. The inclusion of the Castro Regime in the Summit excludes the Cuban people....this delegation is here to speak for the right of the cuban people to have freedom and democracy",expressed Dr. Orlando Gutierrez Boronat on behalf of the delegation. Jorge Luis García Pérez "Antúnez", one of the most recognized leaders of the democratic struggle within the island, served 17 years in Castro's prisons, remains within the island, and has suffered numerous arrests and beatings for his nonviolent activities. Antúnez currently heads the Orlando Zapata Tamayo National Civic Resistance Front, an internal coalition of opposition groups; the blind lawyer and human rights activist Juan Carlos González Leiva is the leader of the Council of Human Rights Rapporteurs of Cuba and Municipal Circles; activist Yris Tamara Pérez Aguilera, who chairs the Rosa Parks Movement, brings together women from different parts of the island defending human rights and whose protests have been harshly repressed; Leticia Ramos Herrería, activist of the Ladies in White and one of the main opposition leaders in the province of Matanzas, the intellectual Rolando Rodríguez Lobaina, coordinator of the Eastern Democratic Alliance (ADO) and an important leader of independent reporting on the island as well as the prominent religious leader Mario Félix Lleonart, of the central area of ​the island. From the Cuban diaspora in the symposium will be former Congressman Lincoln Díaz-Balart, one of the key figures of the Cuban American community, who heads La Rosa Blanca Institute, businesswoman Sylvia Iriondo, president of Mothers Against Repression for Cuba, the principal Cuban American women’s movement and prominent civic leader in the city of Miami, Rogelio Matos, secretary general of Independent and Democratic Cuba (CID), Félix Rodríguez, a veteran fighter for democracy and president of the 2506 Brigade, as well as Dr. Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat, National Secretary of the Cuban Democratic Directorate.
