Secretary General of the Organization of American States Partakes in Historic Meeting with the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba

Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. June 5, 2005/Cuban Democratic Directorate/-- Today José Miguel Insulza, secretary general for the Organization of American States met with former Latin American and European presidents who are members of the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba.

 

Luis Alberto Lacalle, former president of Uruguay, Luis Alberto Monge, former president of Costa Rica, y Mart Laar, former prime minister of Estonia met with Insulza, to whom they presented the details of the international efforts of the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba. Czech Jaromir Stetina senator gave Secretary General Insulza a message from former president Vaclav Havel asking for solidarity with the dissidents in the island.

 

Orlando Gutierrez Boronat, national secretary of the Cuban Democratic Directorate, gave Insulza a copy of the book Boitel Vive, written by political prisoner Jorge Luis García Pérez, Antunez.

 

Also present in the meeting were diverse representatives of the Latin-American civil society, which support democracy in Cuba such as:  Carlos González of the Czeck organization People in Need, René Bolio and Fernando Ponce of Promotora Internacional de Derechos Humanos, Gabriel Salvia of the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL), Hipólito Ramírez  of the Patriotic Dominican Youth  and  Álvaro Bubón member of the Central American Parliament.
