Smuggled Book by Cuban Political Prisoner Debuts in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, 27 June 2005. The Dominican Patriotic Youth, a non-governmental organization in the Dominican Republic, sponsored the launch of “Boitel Lives: A Testimony from Today’s Cuban Political Prisons,” this morning. It was written by long-serving Cuban political prisoner Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez.”

Húber Matos Benítez, himself a former political prisoner and currently General Secretary of Independent and Democratic Cuba, along with John Suárez of the Cuban Democratic Directorate, presented the book in conjunction with Dominican Patriotic Youth representatives Hipólito Ramírez , Héctor de León, and José Luis Guerrero.

“Antúnez is a victim of that system. He has done absolutely nothing that could justify his imprisonment, except for the civil disobedience of a human being faced with a lack of freedom and people’s basic rights,” asserted Matos to the EFE press agency during the event, which took place in Santo Domingo’s Lina Hotel.

In a message recorded in Cuba by Bertha Antúnez, the political prisoner’s sister, she expressed gratitude for the international solidarity for her brother and emphasized the need for the systematic human rights violations perpetrated by the Island’s regime to be known.

The book was published in Buenos Aires by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation and the Center for the Opening and Development of Latin America (CADAL) on May 13th.

This past March 15 marked 15 years of unjust incarceration for Jorge Luis García Pérez “Antúnez.” He has spent long years in prisons far from his home province and has been the victim of terrible beatings, and inhuman and degrading treatment.
